The Greatest Prize June 15, 2018
Last week I attended the Annual Ceremonial Review (year
-end parade) of the cadet squadron I used to work with. It was great to see them all on parade, and to note who got which award. It is an honour to receive an award, and especially when it is presented by a high-ranking official. But as they were handing out awards my mind moved to another “parade.”
At the end of summer missions training, there is a commissioning ceremony, a time when we recognize the hard work and success of each student who has completed the training and commission each one for the mission. No awards are given, but that does not mean nothing was earned. As I thought about the summer missionaries, past and future, I concluded that what you have earned is of far greater value than a trophy. And note from Whom you receive it!
Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day–and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. (2Tim. 4:8)
And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away. (1 Pet. 5:4)
God Himself will rewarded you for your faithfulness to Christ’s command to go and share the gospel! And it is an everlasting reward, so much greater than anything we could earn here on earth!
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matt. 6:19-21)
But even greater than the crown you will receive are the souls who will enter the kingdom because of your obedience! Every part of that process, learning to share the gospel, planting the seed of the gospel, watering that seed, and leading someone to Christ, are all of great and lasting value! We all share in the prize when we are part of the process.
Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. (1 Cor. 9:24b-25)
And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. (Dan. 12:3)
This is what we were created for. This is what Jesus commissioned us to do when He, in those famous last words, told us to go.
And when we obey, we will receive the crown of life, the greatest award we could ever receive!
I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. (Phil. 3:14)
Keep seeking the Kingdom!
