Start Right!

Start Right!

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. Heb 12:1

It is a beautiful September morning. I’m out on my deck, coffee in hand, listening to the birds sing and the squirrels busily harvesting all the food they can find in preparation for winter. There is a crispness to the early autumn morning air, but the sun is bright and the sky is blue, promising the warmth of summer for one more day. Wisps of cloud hang motionless overhead, defying the passage of time.

Yet time passes and another fall has arrived! The school bus has come and gone and is on its way to deliver its students to their first day of a new year. New classes, new teachers, new friends. I have always thought that if one were to make “New Year’s” resolutions, the fall was a better time to do it. Everything starts fresh in the fall. So why shouldn’t we?

Do you, like me, start each fall determined to do better? Whatever you struggled with last year or through the summer, give it to God and ask Him to give you a fresh start. It’s true that we all fail and flounder from time to time, but it’s also true that God is always willing, waiting, wanting to give us a new start! Carolyn Arends sings a song that says, “Every day is New Year’s Day.” In God’s family, by His grace, we can start fresh every day!

So what are you waiting for? Start the year off right. Give God your struggles. Decide today to live for Him this year. Start a daily Bible reading plan, pray every morning, talk to that awkward student, stop allowing things in your life that don’t honour God. Make the decision, and trust God to see you through. I’m praying for you. I know that this can be your best year yet!
