Every year my daughters and I choose a day to go to Ottawa to do our Christmas shopping. It’s great to have a day with my girls, and what better time than when the malls are decorated with Christmas trees and snowflakes and Christmas songs burst from every speaker!
I love Christmas! The music, the sparkle, the excitement that permeates the air! But most of all, I love the joy. People are friendly, and there is an atmosphere of happiness throughout the month of December, even though most people don’t really understand why.
My devotions have been walking through the gospel of John this year, and last week came to chapter 19. As I read Jesus’ words, “It is finished,” I was reminded of the source of the joy we have at Christmas and throughout the year.
Whether acknowledged or not, Christ’s finishing work on Calvary is what sealed our joy. In that moment death was defeated! Our rightful punishment was removed from our debt! We can celebrate with great joy because His suffering brought us life. If he had not come, we would have no hope. Relish the joy this Christmas because you know what Christ has done for you!
The lyrics of “Joy to the World” was written by Isaac Watts, based on Psalm 98.
Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth; Break forth and sing for joy and sing praises! Psalm 98:4
