One of my favourite places to go is the ocean. The roar of the waves, the cool sand on my toes. My sisters and I used to love to walk on driftwood! It was often rather precarious because the wood had been polished smooth and was often wet, so one could easily slip off. Sometimes we found big rocks not far from the water, and would climb those. Some were small and unstable, but we would climb up until we reached the big solid rock at the top.
That rock was secure. While the sand below changed with the ebbing tide, the rock stood firm. It takes many years and great amounts of pressure to move or change a large rock, even a little bit. That is the security of the rock. That is the picture the Bible uses to show us the security we can find in Jesus.
My soul, wait in silence for God only,
For my hope is from Him.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
My stronghold; I shall not be shaken.
On God my salvation and my glory rest;
The rock of my strength, my refuge is in God.
David knew first hand the way life beats against us. If can feel like we’re being bashed against a rock. Other times it’s more subtle, like the daily shifting of the tide on the sand. But only when we find our footing on the Rock of Jesus will we know real peace and security.
Do you feel battered and worn? Do you feel like you just can’t seem to get your footing in life? Do you feel the pressure of the world constantly pushing you this way and that? Call to the Rock of your strength, the God in whom there is refuge.
